How Nigerian students are funding a UK Master's without a bank loan

For many Nigerian families, the first real barrier to a UK Master's isn't the offer letter — it's finding a workable way to pay for it. Bank loans in Nigeria for overseas study are limited and expensive, and moving a full year's tuition out of the country in one transfer is out of reach for most households. GlobCred built SmartPay to address that specific gap: a structured, interest-free payment plan that lets Nigerian students fund a UK Master's in stages, tied to real milestones — offer, visa, arrival — rather than one upfront sum.

What SmartPay actually is

SmartPay is not a loan and does not involve a credit agreement, interest, or a lender standing between you and your university. It's a tuition payment plan: GlobCred structures your remaining balance into fixed monthly instalments, paid directly to your university, after your visa is approved.

The goal is simple — remove the need to find one large sum before you can start, without adding the cost of borrowing to do it.

How the process works

  1. Application. GlobCred submits your application to your chosen university and guides you through admission.
  2. Offer letter. Once approved, you receive your university offer.
  3. Initial deposit. After your unconditional offer, you pay the university's initial tuition deposit to confirm your seat.
  4. CAS and visa. Once conditions are met, including proof of funds, the university issues your CAS and GlobCred supports your UK visa application.
  5. SmartPay begins. Once your visa is approved, your monthly SmartPay instalments start — paid directly to your university.

An example SmartPay balance

Every university and course sets its own fees, scholarships and deposit terms, so your own numbers will differ. Here's how a representative tuition breakdown looks in practice:

Total tuition (example)£17,500
Tuition scholarship– £2,500
Initial university deposit– £4,000
SmartPay balance£11,000

The GlobCred Cash Reward

Once your visa is approved and your instalments begin, GlobCred adds a Cash Reward — typically £1,700 on a representative plan — credited directly to your UK bank account partway through your plan. This is funded by GlobCred itself, not the university, and is separate from any tuition scholarship the university may offer. It's paid to you, not deducted from your balance, and is subject to eligibility and confirmation.

Paying from Nigeria

You don't need a UK account before you start. Early instalments can typically be paid in Naira from Nigeria via bank transfer or supported payment rails, with GlobCred handling conversion to GBP at the time of each payment. Rates move with the market, so we don't fix or guarantee an exchange rate in advance — it's worth planning your monthly budget with some room for FX movement.

Who this suits

SmartPay is built for students who have — or are close to securing — an unconditional offer from a participating UK university, and who need to spread their remaining balance rather than pay it in one instalment. Eligibility is confirmed individually and isn't automatic; a GlobCred advisor will walk through your specific offer and timeline with you.

Common questions

Is SmartPay a loan?
No. It's a payment plan for tuition already owed to your university, not a credit facility. No interest is charged to you under the plan.
What if my UK visa is delayed or refused?
SmartPay only begins once your visa is approved. Visa decisions are made solely by the UK government and are outside GlobCred's control.
Is the Cash Reward guaranteed?
It's subject to eligibility, university confirmation and staying current on your plan. Speak with an advisor for the exact terms that apply to your offer.
